06/22/20: C&C Theatre Talk - 'The Normal Heart'
Monday, June 22nd, 7:30 p.m.
We invite you to join us in reading and discussing The Normal Heart by Larry Kramer (1935-2020). In this play, a gay activist fights to raise public awareness of the devastating disease killing gay men. It is a largely autobiographical treatment of Larry Kramer's personal experience. In the early 1980s, a time when no one knew what was causing the deaths of thousands and no one cared that mostly gay men were dying, Kramer called out Dr. Anthony Fauci as a murderer for not doing enough and organized theatrical protests to ensure no one looked away.
The discussion will be facilitated by two dramaturgs, Zach Marlin and Esther Terry. We will discuss the characters and themes of the play, as well as the play's relevance to our own current experience of a newly devastating pandemic. Even though gathering to see theatre is currently impossible, the canon of great American theatre still lives on the page for us to read, contemplate, and discuss with one another.
